This Week’s Learning Focus:

Reading: We are beginning a new unit studying fairy tales, folktales, and fables.
In this unit, students will be:
*recounting stories to determine the central message, lesson, moral, and/or perspective.
*describing why characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
*distinguishing difference in points of views of characters in a story.
*comparing and contrasting two or more versions of the same story (ex. Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

This week, we are immersing ourselves in fairy tales. We will notice patterns in the stories and common themes found across various tales.

Writing: Second grade authors are busy preparing their books for publishing. Our goal is to be finished this week!

Spelling: A new spelling sort will be coming home on Tuesday. Please make sure all of your child’s spelling homework is completed in his/her spelling notebook. Thursday evening, please make sure your child is gluing the sort into his/her notebook.

Math: We are continuing to use Bar Modeling. That being said, a lot of the problems we are solving need strength in addition and subtraction. In your spare time (if there is any), practice story problems and equations that involve both addition and subtraction from 11-150.

Science: We are watching our plants grow and they are flourishing! Some are at home and some are at school. Continue to ask questions as to why some flourish and some do not. If your plant continues to grow, you can always transplant from a smaller pot to a bigger pot. We love hearing all of the stories about seeds, plants, and growth. Everything changes!
