A Note from Chaplain Zosel

Students are invited to bring in photographs of beloved people in their lives who have died during the past year.  We have an "ofrenda" on a large table in the hall outside the chapel.  Students may bring labeled photos to school, then deliver to me or place them directly on the table.  They will be displayed through Nov. 23, and returned to students by Nov. 30.

Our theme for Grandparents Day is "Salve! May You Be Well!"  Students are encouraged to call or email their Grandparents Day guests and ask them "What does being well mean to you?"  If students would like a response to be included in the Grandparents Day Chapel they can send the response to nan.zosel@breckschool.org by Nov. 16.

Thank you for all of the generous contributions to "Breck Scares Hunger!" We are still weighing and tallying, but we are hoping to meet our goal of 14,000 pounds!

This Week’s Learning Focus:
Reading: This week, we will be identifying character traits and supporting our ideas with evidence from the text. We will also look at settings and introduce main idea and details as part of the plot.

Writing: We will continue to write with intentions and use powerful craft moves like mentor authors in our own writing. We will also begin to revise our stories.

Spelling: A new spelling sort will come home on Monday. Please make sure all of your child’s spelling homework is completed in his/her spelling notebook. Thursday evening, please make sure your child is gluing the sort into his/her notebook.

Math and Science: This week we will be integrating math and science. We will count, weigh, and measure tulip bulbs, pumpkins, and pumpkin seeds. We will also be planting both outside in The Secret Garden and inside with the grow lab. We are learning so much about both botany and math that Joey said, "Our knowledge is like the seeds from a pod bursting open, floating, and growing more and more shoots or plants!"
In math we are also continuing with lessons on regrouping to the tens and hundreds. Subtraction regrouping is coming soon, so brushing up on our fast fact knowledge and honing our skills will be helpful.

Upcoming Reminders:
* Swimming begins this week! The children should bring a swimsuit, towel, and goggles (optional, but recommended) in a small, sturdy bag. These items will be dried at school each night and sent home every couple of days for washing. Also, it is helpful to dress in “easy to wear” uniform options during this unit (ex. avoiding shirts with a lot of buttons, belts, etc.). Please let us know if you have any questions about our first swimming unit.

*Halloween costume day is 10/31
The Halloween Parade begins at 8:40am in the Anderson Gym. It will be followed by a Sing-a-long! The classroom celebration will begin after the Sing-a-long (anticipating 9:15-10:15am).

Outdoor Science

The scientists in Room 18 enjoy making outdoor observations. They are taking time to analyze, record, and share their findings. Joey recently noted, "Our knowledge is like the seeds from a pod bursting open, floating, and growing more and more shoots or plants!"
