This Week’s Learning Focus:

Reading: Students are learning about Important Americans. Research is in full swing as they are discovering why certain individuals are influential in America’s history. The conversations have been meaningful. They have sparked new questions and conversations along the way. I have truly enjoyed guiding this learning process and facilitating these rich conversations. This week, each group will focus on synthesizing their notes to create a presentation to share with their classmates. Be sure to ask your child about “big words” (quotes) we discussed in class.

Writing: We are in the third and final writing unit of the year! Unit 3 is titled Writing About Reading and students are learning to write about beloved books in ways that persuade other to love them as much as they do. Second graders are forming opinions about the books they read and thinking deeply about characters and favorite parts. The goal of this unit is to state clear opinions and support these ideas with evidence.

Math: Math In Focus is making more and more sense to the second graders. The students really enjoyed the unit on money…even the Bar Modeling with money made sense! The students would enjoy collecting change, and bills in a bank. They could earn money, count it, and make a plan. The plan would be to divide the earned money into savings, spending, and service donation. Handling real money has been a bonus for this class. They love to learn about the famous people on our bills and change, along with looking closely at money from other countries. This unit has so many layers. It could easily carry over to the summer! Many students didn’t want to move on, but we leaped into fractions this week.. The components of the fraction unit are the whole divided into equal parts. We will review ½, 1/3, ¼, ¾ along with comparing fractions and adding combination of fractions.

Looking Ahead:

*
May 19th: Field Day and BBQ
*May 29th: No School, Memorial Day
* May 31st: Portfolio Presentation, 8:45-9:45AM (An invitation will be coming home this week.)
